Probably most of you have heard by now that Google has decided to ‘retire’ their reader. Below is a screen shot of my reader list:
If you have a Google account, you have access to the reader list. If you have a Blogger (Google) blog, you have access to the reader list. If you ‘follow’ blogs via your Blogger blog, you will have a reader list similar to this. This may not be news to most of you.
Personally, I don’t use Google reader, but rather follow blogs through my Dashboard:
Note the Reading List on the left-hand side.
But I know that there are some folk out there who read my blog regularly, who don’t have a blog, and they may be using Google Reader to keep up with blog entries.
So today’s post is for both bloggers and followers.
First followers – if you ‘follow’ blogs via Google Reader, you are probably looking for another way to follow those blogs. One is to ‘subscribe’ by email, if the blog has that option available to you. If you look on my side-bar, there’s a little gadget titled ‘Follow by Email’ – simply add your email address in the box provided and follow the directions. Thereafter you will get email notification when a new post is published.
You can also ‘follow’ any blog by ‘joining’ the site – again that option is found on my side-bar. To be able to do that, you must have a Google account. Also note that if you don’t have a blog, the only current way to be notified of new posts is via Google reader.
Another way to ‘follow’ for non-bloggers is to add the blog to your favorites, and check every so often to see if a new post has been published.
There are a couple of other ways to follow blogs, that are foreign to me, so I won’t try to explain it all here, but if you check out Karen’s post on Sew Many Ways she explains it all well.
Now for bloggers – a little note on making your blog accessible for others to read and ‘follow’. You probably all have the ‘Join This Site’ gadget, which is perfect for all those folk out there with Google accounts. But (again) they won’t be able to follow via Google reader in the near future. So you may want to add the ‘Follow by Email’ gadget for those folks. And, once again, if you don’t know how to add a gadget, Karen explains it well on her post (see the link above).
Just a little heads’ up, early in the game, so you’re all prepared.
Happy following! Blessings, Peg
